Tucked right into the scenic gap of the Short Hill Mountain near Hillsboro, Planetary Farms is one of Western Loudoun’s most extraordinary agricultural hidden gems. Founded by grower Dave Mascatello, this five-acre homestead skips commercial flashiness to focus on regenerative permaculture, biodiversity, and sustainable food forests. It functions as a living library of edible landscapes, cultivating hundreds of rare fruiting varieties—from over 150 kinds of figs and native pawpaws to chocolate persimmons, hardy berries, and cold-hardy nursery plants.
Offering an intimate, educational look at what happens when deep ecological stewardship meets small-scale farming. Visitors can book guided fruit-tasting tours during the season or pick up specialized starter trees and perennial shrubs to start their own backyard orchard. Having dedicated growers pushing the envelope of sustainable agriculture right here in our backyard is a huge part of what makes living in Western Loudoun so rewarding
